    Łódź Film School

    The Łódź Film School, known all over the world and one of the oldest film schools in the world, has produced a great number of film directors, cinematographers and actors who have become an integral part of the history of Polish and world cinematography.

    Among its graduates are winners of prestigious film awards: Andrzej Wajda, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Roman Polański and Krzysztof Kieślowski, cameramen: Paweł Edelman, Krzysztof Ptak, Witold Sobociński, as well as artists of the younger generation: Wojciech Smarzowski, Piotr Trzaskalski, Xawery Żuławski, Małgorzata Szumowska and Jan Komasa.

    The Film School in Łódź has also produced a few generations of superb film and theatre actors, including: Janusz Gajos, Bronisław Wrocławski, Jan Machulski, Barbara Brylska, Barbara Barańska, Zbigniew Zamachowski, Cezary Pazura, Wojciech Malajkat, Edyta Olszówka and Gabriela Muskała.

    Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty of Visual Arts

    The Academy was founded in 1945 as the crowning achievement of artists of Łódź, such as Władysław Strzemiński, the pioneer of constructivist avant-garde in the 1920’s and 1930’s, the author of the Unism theory, and currently the patron of the Academy. In the post-war Poland, the Academy was an enclave of modernity, and still constitutes a breeding ground for artists of various fields, including professionals for the film industry.

    At the Visual Arts Faculty, in the Department of Multimedia, in the Section of Photography, Film and Digital Media, as well as in the Department of Sculpture, Intermedia and Spatial Actions, the Academy trains future film animators, propmen, costume designers, production designers, lighting engineers, animation artists, multimedia graphics designers and art critics.

    The students explore the issues of theater, film, and television techniques, puppet, flat, and spatial animation, as well as the processing technology of static and moving digital image.

    The Academy of Music in Łódź is a modern university with rich output, open to new forms of development and promotion of culture and music education. It was established in 1945 and, since its beginnings, it has been continually playing a significant role in shaping the musical life of Łódź and the region.

    University of Łódź, Section of History and Theory of Film

    The Section of History and Theory of Film of the University of Łódź is the oldest university centre for film theory studies in Poland.

    It was found in 1959 as the Section of Film Studies. In 2002, it was transformed into the Department of Media and Audiovisual Culture, within which the today’s Section of History and Theory of Film was established. Since 2016, the unit has been conducting independent film studies at the Bachelor level.

    Various recognised artists and outstanding filmmakers, critics and culture journalists, such as Wiesław Godzic, Zygmunt Machwitz, Tadeusz Szczepański, Paweł Edelman, Józef Robakowski, Dorota Kędzierzawska, Władysław Pasikowski, or Anita Werner, were engaged in cooperation with the Section at different stages of their careers.
